Addis Ababa, July 17, 2023:– Ababa Embiale, Vice President of the Ethiopian Federal Supreme Court, has been elected to the African Union Advisory Board against Corruption.
Over the weekend, the AU Executive Councilelected and appointed members of several AU organs in its Nairobi meeting.
The Advisory Board against Corruption was one of the five organs that saw four new members elected and one other reelected to serve for a two-year term.
Apart from Abeba, Principe Ntbasume of Burundi, Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania, and Ms. Erica Ndlovu of Botswana will serve their first terms. Marthe Boularangar of Chad was also reelected to serve for a second term.
The five members of the AU advisory board against Corruption will assume office as of October 2023.
The board, an autonomous organ, is mandated to promote and encourage the adoption of measures and actions by State Parties to the AU Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption to prevent, detect, punish, and eradicate corruption and related offenses in Africa.
Meanwhile, the AU executive council also voted in four commissioners for the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).
Salma Sassi Safer of Algeria is a new addition to the commission, while Prof. Rémy Ngoy Lumbu of the DRC, Essaiem Hatem of Tunisia, and Maria Teresa Manuela of Angola will serve for six more years as commissioners at the ACHPR.
Headquartered in the Gambian capital Banjul, ACHPR is entrusted to lead continental efforts to protect and promote human rights and interpret the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The council meeting also saw new members approved for the AU Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), the AU Commission on International Law (AUCIL), and the AU Board of External Auditors audits.
