Addis Ababa( Ethiopia Today) June 23, 2023) The Ethiopian Food Systems Transformation and Nutrition Inter-ministerial Steering Committee was officially inaugurated on June 21, 2023, marking a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s efforts to revamp its food system. Led by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health, the committee comprises 14 ministries dedicated to coordinating and guiding the country’s food system transformation.
With a rapidly growing population and a reliance on agriculture, improving Ethiopia’s food system is crucial for its development and economic growth. The committee’s mandate includes spearheading policy and legal initiatives, monitoring and evaluating implementation, securing funding, and championing the transformation at local, regional, and global levels.
This initiative aligns with the United Nations Food System Summit’s goal to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Ethiopia joined the effort in early 2020, aiming to address food security and poverty eradication challenges. To achieve this, Ethiopia has established a governance system involving all stakeholders, from producers to consumers, and has called for engagement from politicians, technologists, researchers, and the media.
During its inaugural meeting, the steering committee recommended the inclusion of the Government Communication Service Office in the committee, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in driving positive change.
