Addis Ababa (Ethiopia Today), June 7, 2023: Ethio Telecom has entered into an agreement with the Addis Ababa city administration to deploy a wide-area network as part of the implementation of a smart city project.
Ethio Telecom’s CEO, Frehiwot Tamru, signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with the city’s Innovation and Technology Development Bureau Chief Solomon Amare on Tuesday.
Ethio Telecom will install a wide area network, or SD-WAN, network infrastructure to interconnect different bureaus and service-rendering institutions of the city with the main data center.
The project will interlink 11 sub-city offices, 120 woredas, and 44 different bureaus of the city through super-speed and high-bandwidth optical services, or Lamda Connectivity, with a capacity of up to 100 gigabytes (GB).
The project will contribute to efforts to make Addis Ababa a technology hub and address the ever-growing technology demands and data security concerns of the city administration by interconnecting the sub-cities and woredas “with mission-critical technology and real-time services.”
The technologies to be deployed will “be the latest operating system of high quality, reliability, and efficiency that can enable us to provide quality services to the residents of the city and maximize the performance capacity and efficiency of service provision,” she adds.
Apart from Addis Ababa, Ethio Telecom has a similar agreement with the Adama City administration.
