Addis Ababa( Ethiopia Today) June 1,2023; Scholars urges Authority for Development (IGAD) to prioritize resolving conflicts using political measures as conflicts occur in the Horn and East Africa region have severely challenged its performance.
Ethiopian Civil Service University Law School Dean, Tesfaye Abate (PhD) said that instabilities of the region have affected IGAD’s performance.
IGAD is regional organization established with the purpose of integrating regional economies and enhancing social interaction among people.
However, its organizational performance compared to its counterparts can be regarded as substandard because of instabilities recurrently take place, he commented.
“Regional stability should be achieved by taking political resolution measures to make developmental plans [of IGAD] effectual, and political leaders of IGAD member countries are expected to work together as there has been no robust implementation achieved so far. Therefore, leaders should prioritize stabilizing the region,” he said.
As to him, IGAD member states must cooperate to enhance neighbourhood cooperation in resolving conflicts. IGAD Executive Secretary Spokesperson, Nuur Mohamud Sheekh said as the organization is being challenged by instability, drought and other socio-political hurdles, financial supports and human resources have to be reinvigorated since these are the major needed resources to build IGAD’s capacity.
Member Countries and the region East Africa have large financial and human resources. But, their contribution to the region is not still as expected.
All member states should respond to IGAD’s request of supports and should obey IGAD-led resolution mechanisms to resolve intra-regional conflicts, he urged.
