Addis Ababa (Ethiopia Today) May 8,2023: The French government has extended its aid to two hospitals affected by the ongoing conflict in the northern region.
The Ministry of Health in Ethiopia and the French government signed a MoU today to expand their collaboration to support health recovery efforts in Ethiopia, specifically in rehabilitating and reequipping the town’s hospital in Abala (Afar).
The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Health in Ethiopia, Dr. Lia Tadesse, and the Ambassador of France to Ethiopia and to the African Union, Mr. Rémi Marechaux. Abala’s hospital in Afar and Adwa hospital in Tigray will receive assistance to rehabilitate and re-equip their healthcare facilities.
It is heartening to see the global community coming together to support the healthcare sector in Ethiopia during these challenging times. This support is vital to ensuring that the people of Ethiopia have access to quality healthcare services and facilities. We hope that other nations will follow France’s lead in extending their aid to Ethiopia’s healthcare sector, which is in dire need of support.

The MoU on Abala’s hospital will strengthen health recovery initiatives in Ethiopia and represents the pursuit of a bilateral project aiming to provide support to ongoing stabilization efforts in the country.
The 2.5 million euro project is funded by the Crisis and Support Center of France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and implemented by Expertise France, the French public agency for the design and implementation of international technical cooperation projects, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Afar Regional Health Bureau, and Abala’s Hospital medical staff.
On the occasion of this signing ceremony, Ambassador Maréchaux handed over a letter to Dr. Lia Tadesse that informs France that it intends to support the re-equipment of Adwa’s public hospital with a 1.5 million euro donation provided by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
